Could any of the Linux toughguys help me with a sound problem?

While I love everything about Linux, I'm a total noob at it. I recently set up Lucid as a server/cinema box. Everything's been running pretty smoothly, but the other day I lost sound - It's a basic ICH7 chip which was working perfectly. The hardware is detected (when I do the thing that lists components in terminal) but there's no sound card installed now apparently when I look in the volume settings etc. Is there an easy way to gut the sound stuff and reinstall? I've been all over the ubuntu site but nothing there seems to help me.

Printing HTML/CSS resume on one page

Hey reddit, I have this huge job fair coming up in less than a week, so I really need to throw together a decent resume within the next few days.
So far, I have this document (I'm still working on the actual content), and it looks fine in most non-IE web browsers, but my problem is actually getting the damn thing on paper (or PDF). >.<
So far I've tried printing to PDF from Chromium/Firefox/Konqueror, wkhtml, HTMLDOC, and direct printing without the intermediate PDF step. All failed :(.
So, is anyone here an expert on getting these sorts of documents to print scaled and formatted correctly on a single page?

My foolhardy attempt to install Ubuntu on a laptop with a broken screen...

I have a Compaq nc6400 laptop with a broken backlight. I use an external monitor, which has done the trick... until I tried to install Ubuntu.
When I try to boot from my Ubuntu CD, the monitor doesn't get a signal from my laptop. I've been doing some research online, and can't find a single workaround. Any ideas?
